Vivian Alexander

You are invited!

Baton Rouge landmark sculptures will be on public display once more.

Originally created at the turn of the century, and under wraps for the last twenty five years, these sculptures will now reside in rural Vermilion parish and grace the entrance to the Vivian Alexander Gallery and Museum. This Friday the sculptures that originally looked down on the marquee of the Paramount Theatre on Third Street in Baton Rouge will be unveiled. You are invited to join the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce for the event. A light lunch will be served, and the newly renovated Gallery will be opened for inspection.
No reservations or fees required.

Sculpture Presentation: Paramount Theatre's Boys of Summer, 1979

ImageThe venerable Paramount Theatre in Baton Rouge was torn down the summer of 1979. It stood the test of time from the turn of the 20th century. Worked into the façade, just above the sidewalk traffic on Third Street, were four concrete sculptures, The Four Boys of Summer. The precast sculptures watched generations of theatre goers; beginning with the kiddies plays and progressed to the sophisticated theatre of the day. When they fell, a wonderful Baton Rouge landmark fell. The boys were picked up and hauled off with the rest of the trashed facade.

Alexander found two of the boys; one in a BR neighborhood garden, and one in an architectural salvage yard. They have been stored in his Maurice barn for the last twenty five years, waiting for their proper exhibition. "When the senior citizens in Baton Rouge find that the beloved Boys of Summer are again presiding in a place of honor, they will want to revisit old memories. We will be happy to have them," says Alexander.

Vivian Alexander Gallery and Museum has enlarged and renovated for the holidays. The dedication and open house is scheduled for Friday, October 5th. Two of the Boys of Summer are now guarding the entranceway. They will preside over their second ribbon cutting in a century. Bring your camera!
